To provide quality education to the needy people a Cheran Foundation Trust was established in 1991 to serve the community of ‘Perur’ village in Coimbatore district and ‘Kangeyam’taluk in Tirupur. To cherish the motive of the trust of the institution in the year 2000, SMS College of Arts and Science was established in Perur, Coimbatore affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. Under the efficient Chairmanship of Mr. K.C. Palanisamy and the prominent Secretaryship of the Founder (late) Mrs. Soundari Palanisamy, the College has blossomed with full academic rich culture.
Coimbatore city, the industrial centre of South India, famously called as the Manchester of South India, where a wide range and variety of goods production is recorded, aroused the need for the inception of B.Com and BBA programs at SMSCAS in July 2000, for the learning community to understand about the prevailing professional link between consumers and producers.
To compete and enrich the computer skills and to extend the horizon of computer science knowledge, B.Sc. (Computer Science) and BCA programs were started in 2002.To focus on numerical with computing skill B.Sc. (Mathematics with Computer Application) program was started in 2003. To create exciting avenues to explore ideas from mobile phone to fiber optics B.Sc. (Electronics & Communication Systems) was initiated in the year 2005. B.Sc. (Catering Science & Hotel Management) was started in 2005 to serve the hospitality sector professionally.
The Manchester of South India, Coimbatore, has the extensive textile industries; to feed the garment sector catering to voluminous demands in the international market B.Sc. (Costume Design & Fashion) program was started in the year 2006. To expose the student’s imagination and creativity to the media world, B.Sc. (Visual Communication & Electronic Media) was started in 2006. To utilize the communication opportunities in the IT sector B.Sc. (Information Technology) was started in the year 2007.
To nurture the research aspirants in commerce, Master of Commerce (M.Com.) was initiated in 2008. The Department of Social Work was started in the year 2008 with the motive to serve people with humanitarian and ethical values.
To implement methods and strategies that use cutting-edge technology, B.Sc. (Computer Technology), M.Sc. (Computer Technology), and M.Sc. (Information Technology) was started in the year 2009. To focus on Interdisciplinary programs like commerce with computer application, B.Com. With Computer Application program was initiated in the year 2017. To promote the global competency skills of the students to face the challenges that occur in the competitive environment, B.Com.(Information Technology), B.Com.(Professional Accounting), and B.Com. (Finance) programs were started in the year 2018.
To gain insight into language and literature B.A. (Tamil Literature) was started in the year 2018. To satisfy the basic need of the research in computer fields, M.Sc. (Computer Science) was started in the year 2021. For the evolving opportunities in the business world for the aspirants of English literature, B.A., (English Language and Literature) program will be initiated during the academic year 2021 – 2022. As an effort to protect the society from the fast paced lifestyle and to shield the human mind towards a flawless society, B.Sc. (Psychology) program will be initiated during the academic year 2021 – 22.
SMS College of Arts and Science (SMSCAS) is a self-financing institution affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, founded by the Cheran Foundation Trust in 1991 to offer quality education with social responsibility acknowledging holistic development. SMSCAS ensures the knowledge and skill development of the students to compete internationally through blended learning. To gain knowledge beyond the classroom activities and for hands-on training, industry visit, technical and non-technical skill development activities, etc., to induce MoUs/Linkages and Tie-ups with organizations like PSGR Krishnammal College for Women – Coimbatore, ICTACT Academy, and etc. are established.
To achieve quality in education, SMSCAS systematically organizes curricular and co-curricular activities through student-supporting centres and clubs. Committees are constituted to support the execution of all the tasks in a well-organized manner for the holistic development of the institution. To horn, the talents of our sports students the Department of Physical Education at SMSCAS has encouraged and trained the students in their specialized events by creating tremendous opportunities. The Department of Physical Education conducts many Inter-University, Inter-Collegiate, and Open Tournaments in the field of indoor and outdoor sports and participating in the All India Inter-University tournaments. The department coordinates games and sports activities of the other affiliated colleges of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and provides opportunities for the students to demonstrate their competence in inter-collegiate sports meets.
To equip the teaching-learning process, our campus is provided with a WIFI facility with a speed of 300 MBPS and high configured systems with a ratio of 5:1, to develop the computing skills of the students. To ensure the safety of the women faculty members of the college a 24/7 vigilance through CCTV camera is available in the campus. To maximize the learning potential, our Learning Resource Centre (Library) connects students individually to access resources through digital Library service and to utilize all the available net sources.
